The company had relocated to Burbank in 1928, next to the Union Airport which they bought in 1940.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe P-38 was the only American fighter aircraft in large-scale production throughout American involvement in the war.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlong with its use as a general fighter, the P-38 was used in various aerial combat roles, including as a highly effective fighter-bomber, a night fighter, and a long-range escort fighter when equipped with drop tanks. The P-38 was also used as a bomber-pathfinder, guiding streams of medium and heavy bombers, or even other P-38s equipped with bombs, to their targets. Used in the aerial reconnaissance role, the P-38 accounted for 90 percent of the aerial film captured over Europe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe airport, three miles northwest of downtown Burbank, has had many name changes. It has been United Airport (1930-34) Union Air Terminal (1934-40) Lockheed Air Terminal (1940–1967) Hollywood-Burbank airport (1967-1978) Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport (1978- 2003) and Bob Hope Airport (after comedian British-American comedian Bob Hope, who died in 2003.)
