This image of Finland's national carrier Finnair skywriting the shape of a spoon is a clever and inventive way to advertise its in-flight menu.
Founded in 1923, Finnair is one of the oldest airlines in continuous operation and is consistently listed as one of the safest in the world.
Its first flight was on 20 March 1924, from Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia, on a Junkers F.13 aircraft equipped with floats. This seaplane service ended in 1936, following the construction of the first aerodromes in Finland.
During World War II, half of the airline's fleet was requisitioned by the Finnish Air Force. The airline played a major role during the country’s Winter War, the 1939–1940 conflict between Finland and the Soviet Union, characterized by heavy Soviet invasion, fierce Finnish resistance and significant territorial loss for Finland.
Half of the airline's passengers from other Finnish cities during this era were children evacuated to Sweden.
