The first establishment of its kind, the restaurant was a pioneer in the country’s steakhouse culture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cultural and gastronomic landmark offered the churrascaria experience, an all-you-can-eat steakhouse or rodizio still popular today and characterized by attentive waiting staff ( gauchos) who bring a variety of foods to hungry diners until they are satisfied.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe restaurant occupied two dining halls with a total capacity of 700 people, including a stage where live shows were held: Tuesdays featured a romantic dance night; Thursdays, a band played MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) and dance music; Saturdays were for performances by two bands and Sundays, a *forró* dance party. *Forró* is an umbrella term for different dances and rhythms.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore the capital was moved to the newly built city of Brasília in 1960, Churrascaria Gaúcha was a mandatory stop for politicians and public officials. Today, cent denominations are no longer in circulation in this island country in the Caribbean.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother boast of this bar was its air conditioning – illustrated by a happy pink elephant sitting on an ice cube.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe euphemism ‘seeing pink elephants’ was first used in the 19th century to describe the hallucinations experienced by drinkers of absinthe, the anise-flavored and highly alcoholic beverage associated with bohemian culture. Those who turned up under-dressed could rent the required clothing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eClub Morocco was certainly a mish-mash of styles because it had an African theme with paintings of warriors with shields, spears and masks on the walls but served Cantonese and Mandarin dishes. The faux décor may have been a clumsy tribute to the legendary El Morocco nightclub in New York city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“It just seemed to have an air of danger about it,’ said music historian John Einarson in his book ‘Heart of Gold: A History of Winnipeg Music.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘You didn't mess around when you went there and you behaved yourself, but it was a great place for Winnipeg musicians to play and a great place to see a lot of jazz performers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘It became Winnipeg's top nightspot and the longest-running such jazz club not only in our city, but in Western Canada.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAmong the musicians who performed there were George Reznik, the esteemed Winnipeg jazz pianist who played with Louis Armstrong and Barbra Streisand among others, and the saxophonist and Winnipeg clothing manufacturer Al Sprintz and his band.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the surviving members of The Ink Spots, the singing quartet who formed in 1934, recorded with Decca Records and whose most famous song was If I Didn’t Care, also played there following the crooners’ break-up in 1954.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother performer was the American actress and singer Nichelle Nichols who later took the role of Lt. We’ve found adverts from as early as 1936 in the now defunct Pacific Grove Tribune newspaper advertising its steaks and seafood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne advert boasts:’ If our steaks are tough, we don’t give you another knife, we give you another steak.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother advert boasted that it was in the ‘golf capital of the world’ and that more golf shots were hit perfectly after breakfast at Lovers Point Inn than anywhere else in the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe icon of the inn was this delightful pelican sitting on a mooring post.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe community of Pacific Grove on the Monterey Pacific coast was established in 1875 as a Methodist Christian summer camp, known for its religious retreat origins. It developed into a Victoria-era municipality, but some of the religious restrictions remained for years. Fuji, an active volcano about 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. Affectionately called ‘Fuji-san,’ it is the country’s tallest peak, at 3,776 meters (12,389 feet.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAmerican heiress Clara Macbeth (1871–1970) was a long-term passenger on the Caronia, notching up 14 straight years between 1949 and 1963. An only child, she was raised in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and inherited her family’s fortune based on the invention of an electric dynamite detonator and property investment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Caronia was known as the’ millionaire’s yacht’ for its luxury amenities and had 600 staff to cater for 600 passengers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eClara stayed in the same stateroom (A32) the entire time, decorated with her personal items and attended to by the same stewards. William H. Miller, an expert on the heyday of ocean liners, referred to Clara and her group of other women who were long-term cruisers as ‘the kind of women who wore diamond bracelets up to their elbows at 9 o’clock in the morning.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Caronia was sold to a Greek shipping line in 1968, and the following year,  at age 96, Clara revealed to the NY Daily News that she was spending $396 a day to keep herself and her traveling companion, Madoline E. Frank, in luxury aboard other cruise ships. Painted between 1935 and 1937, this giant mural located in the school library was funded by the WPA Federal Arts Project (FAP).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAriss and his wife became close friends of two other significant figures in Monterey - the celebrated novelist John Steinbeck (1902-1968) and the pioneering marine biologist, Ed Ricketts (1897- 1948).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe couple, who initially rented in Pacific Grove, later bought several lots on Huckleberry Hill in Monterey and built their own property that evolved over the years into a 25-room dwelling for themselves, their five children and their huge circle of friends. The ramshackle property was wittily described by Steinbeck as a ‘triumph over architecture.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLater in life, Ariss designed and helped build the city’s Wharf Theater and in the 1950s worked as a set designer in Hollywood and specifically on the I Love Lucy show.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Outrigger was established in 1959 on Cannery Row by restaurateur Robert Wind and we assume Ariss was friends with the owner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe  menu featured an extensive range of tiki cocktails and so-called Polynesian food (Chinese food in reality) and the potent house cocktail, named the Outrigger, was described as ‘fuel for the gods ... or for devils who do not fear the outcome.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe restaurant was popular with locals and visitors and was featured in a spoof film by Mike Nesbitt of the Monkees.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFire damaged the establishment in 1978, and the restaurant changed hands and was rebuilt as Mark Thomas’s Outrigger. It changed hands again and closed in 1994.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFire also destroyed the Ariss's house in 1990, along with many of the artist’s works. In 1991, the company donated the historic Greystone building to The Culinary Institute of America.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe’re not sure who owned the Red Hen during this period but in the 1980s, we believe it was owned by Norman Sawicki and his wife Christy. There were two locations: first at 5091 Solano Avenue, north of Napa, and later at 4174 Solano Avenue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Red Hen closed for good in 2019 after the owners of premises decided not to renew the couple’s lease. A popular spot for locals, it was a bitter blow after the Sawickis’ 37-year run. As demand continued, this much-loved local businessman expanded Walt’s Wharf into a fully-fledged restaurant and oyster bar with an oak fire pit that became an iconic part of Seal Beach for more than 50 years.\u003cbr\u003eThe fish was so fresh, catches were sometimes brought through the front door. One long-time patron remembers hearing a struggle at the entrance of the restaurant and turning around to see three employees wrestling a giant and freshly-landed fish through the front door. Walt himself would often go out on his boat and return with fresh fish for dinner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWalt, who owned a cattle ranch in Montana, also established the highly regarded Babcock Winery in Santa Barbara. He passed away at the age of 84 in 2016, leaving his children Brenda and Bryan and a host of loyal employees to carry on what he started. A fire that erupted in January 2024 caused Walt’s to close. But locals who retain their happy memories of the restaurant hope that Walt’s will re-open in the future. Percolators that cycle boiling water through coffee grounds were widely used at home and in businesses during this era. However, it took four to seven minutes for a percolator to start ‘perking,’ and the appliances had to be watched over and often produced a beverage with a bitter taste. Aggressive advertising in the 60s and 70s of electric drip machines offering more hands-off brewing and better beverage outcomes led to percolators plummeting in popularity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe history of coffee in the United States is an interesting one. Coffee was brought to the New World (now New York) by the Dutch. Drinking coffee became a patriotic act of defiance against British tea taxes after the 1773 Boston Tea Party when chests of tea were dumped in Boston Harbor to protest taxes and a monopoly on tea by the British owned East India Tea Company. President Teddy Roosevelt (1858-1919) was known to consume a gallon of coffee a day and was rumored to have inspired the Maxwell House coffee slogan ‘good to the last drop.’ In 1864, the Arbuckle brothers started selling pre-roasted coffee in paper bags, revolutionizing access for Western settlers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCoffee was rationed in the United States from November 1942 until July 1943 to prioritize shipping for the war effort and support troops during WWII.  With supplies limited by German U-boat attacks, civilians were limited to roughly one pound every five weeks, resulting in less than one cup per day. Later, it was reduced to one pound every six weeks. Civilians frequently stretched their coffee rations by reusing grounds – the nickname for this weak and caffeine-light drink was a Roosevelt coffee – or using alternatives like chicory or soy. Another option was drinking Postum, a caffeine-free, instant beverage made from roasted wheat bran and molasses and created in 1895. Wright, who found an appreciation for Japanese design and culture at the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893, first traveled to Japan in 1905. He traveled there again in 1913 and between 1917 and 1922 spent almost all his time in Japan overseeing the building of the new version of the hotel which affectionately became known as “the jewel of the Orient”. This 1956 menu was from Wright's era, before the hotel was demolished in 1968 and replaced with a high-rise structure. However, the entrance lobby that incorporated a façade and reflecting pool from Wright’s masterpiece was saved and reconstructed at the open-air Meiji Mura architecture museum in Nagoya.\u003cbr\u003eToday the Imperial Hotel is a modern structure but still proudly displays its connection to the renowned architect with Wright-inspired motifs, patterns and designs incorporated into the building.  There is a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright suite and also housed inside the current hotel is the Old Imperial Bar, which features relics from the Wright era including a mural, terracotta wall art and lamps. Initially it was spelled Veerasawmy, it became Veeraswamy because of a printing error.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVeeraswamy in Regent Street was not the first Indian restaurant in Britain (one had been opened by Sake Dean Mahomed in 1810), or the only one in 1926, but it was probably the first high-end one, and one of the first to cater to a largely European (though initially admittedly mostly ex-Indian Civil Service and Indian Army) clientele. It was certainly the first to cater to European royalty. The restaurant was taken over by Sir William Steward in 1930. He was married to a singer and artist of the time Greta Gaye. Throughout the 1930s trade was very difficult but the couple used great resourcefulness and came through the challenging times. In 1915 Veeraswamy published a recipe book, Indian Cookery for Use in All Countries, which is still in print today. In the 1940s and 1950s the restaurant became a great success. The first ever curry in a can was introduced under Veeraswamy Food Products brand in the early 1950s. The restaurant was sold by Sir William in 1967. The food products business under the Veeraswamy name continued to be owned by the couple into the 1990s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe restaurant decor was updated a number of times, and adopted an ultramodern theme in the late 1990s; however, for its 80th anniversary in 2006, it was redecorated in a 1920s motif.
