The advent of air conditioning, the blossoming network of interstate highways, and a growing population, provided the path to opportunity for this entrepreneur. Residents and tourists needed places to eat. In 1968, Bill Darden thinking that a seafood restaurant might be successful in a non-coastal location, opened the first Red Lobster in Lakeland, Florida.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe rest is definitely history. Darden, as the corporate entity is now known, grew to become one of the world's largest full- service restaurant company owning and operating more than 2,000 restaurants. There was also full fountain service for ice cream, root beer and crème beer. Positioned on route US 27, The Pine Villa Restaurant in the 1940s was a popular stopping off point for motorists on their way to Cincinnati as well as a favored spot for local farm workers. Look at the hours that it was open – from 6am till 1am. Motorists would stop for coffee, hot cakes and breakfast, lunch or dinner, and then they would fill up their cars with gas and get on their way. It wasn't a fancy place as you can see from the photos and from the menu, but it was one of those restaurants that provided a valuable service to a rural community. This was Chevy Chase Village in Kentucky in the Sixties, the era of ' peace and love' promoting anti-war activism, personal freedom and an embrace of alternative lifestyles. The Scene was a hangout for students from the campus of the University of Kentucky, who obviously considered themselves super-groovy. In the interior menu, there's another comical portrait of a Beatnik type wearing sunglasses and winkle pickers alongside a hippie girlfriend. There's interesting stuff on the menu too, including a Coffee Cooler Cocktail that was made by mixing espresso and ginger ale. Some allowed ladies in as special guests but many enforced a complete ban. Some even used the ban on female guests as a marketing ploy, thus The Esquire wrote on its menus:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Esquire is Reserved for the Exclusive Use of Men. Please Do Not Ask Us to Permit the Patronage of the Ladies.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Esquire's menu was geared towards hearty he-man tastes such as Spaghetti Bolognaise (sic) with Meatcake Whatever that is.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany men preferred business dining without female company and The Esquire was popular for a while but it became a mixed-company establishment with the advent of the Second World War.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIts unusual name came about because the owners of Esquire Magazine, which had begun publication in October 1933, must have thought that licensing the Esquire name to a men only restaurant would give the brand some cache. Arriving in the fall of 1682, he landed first at New Castle, before sailing further up the Delaware River to Upland (later renamed Chester) where he moored. Continuing his journey another fifteen miles by barge, he came to an area known today as Penn's Landing—a ten-block stretch along the river from Vine Street to South Street in Philadelphia. The importance once accorded this event is reflected by this superb menu from a banquet in 1854 celebrating the 172nd anniversary of his arrival. It was hosted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the dinner was held at La Pierre House, then, a new luxury hotel. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eAn American eagle appears at the top of the menu, perched over a portrait of George Washington flanked by American flags, creating a splendid trifecta of patriotic images. Gilded and tinted in a lithographic process using three stones, the menu was made by Eugene Ketterlinus, one of the first printers in the country to produce colored and embossed lithographs. Strong and flexible, the lightweight alloy did not rust, no matter how much it was exposed to the elements.\u003cbr\u003eStreamlined both for aesthetic reasons and for efficiency – the distinctive shape also reduced air resistance.\u003cbr\u003eInside was novel too – there was air conditioning, soft lighting and none of the fussy furniture that had been installed on Pullman trains.\u003cbr\u003eOn May 25, 1934, the first of the renowned Zephyrs completed a 1015- mile non-stop run from Denver to Chicago in 785 minutes – an average of 77.6 miles an hour.\u003cbr\u003eOn Armistice Day, it entered service between Kansas City, Omaha and Lincoln, establishing the first diesel-powered streamline train service in America. She was finally wrecked as the SS American Star at Playa de Garcey on Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands on 18 January 1994. The wreck is still there to this day, but has now mostly collapsed and broken up into the sea and only a small section of the bow remains visible at low tide. Carl Icahn acquired control of TWA and took the company private in a leveraged buyout in 1988. TWA became saddled with debt and underwent Chapter 11 restructuring in 1992 and 1995, and was further stressed by the explosion of TWA Flight 800 in 1996. It served local Ka Moi coffee, but the food was decidedly American.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHamburgers costs $30c and liverwurst sandwiches were a bargain 15c. There was an all-you-can-eat lunch for 35c and the most expensive item on the menu was a Porterhouse steak for 90 cents. Cheap beer and whisky were also on sale.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe café had a concession stall where military men could have their pictures taken with ‘hula girls’ to send home to their families as souvenirs, as well as slot machines and live music for entertainment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vintage menu cover illustration was probably modelled after Felix the cat, the cartoon character created in 1919 by Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer during the silent film era. Ritsy was depicted in a striking 10ft high neon sign above the original restaurant with his arm going up and down and the light he was holding flashing on and off.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf course, the Aristocratic name was a joke because these were not fancy places.
