Jean Cocteau has been quoted as saying, \"Poverty is a luxury in Montparnasse\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVictor Libion, the proprietor of La Rotonde, would often accept a drawing or a painting from an artist who could not pay the bill. One of the earliest references to the hotel is from 1855 when it was described in Bradshaw’s notes as being a first class hotel in the centre of the finest part of Paris near the boulevards and the new Opera House. The proprietor was a M. Number 17 Avenue Victor-Emmanuel III (renamed Avenue Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1945) was a run-down bistro until René Lasserre took it over and, in 1942, opened his eponymous restaurant. During WW2, he and the restaurant staff protected resistance fighters at the same time as its reputation for fine dining spread. \u003cbr\u003eIn 1948 he founded his Club de la Casserole, whose dinners became a must for Parisian celebrities. Dali, Dietrich, Hepburn, Malraux and Chagall, were all regulars. Now British Royals and super-models have become Lasserre loyalists who are on occasion lucky enough to dine under the stars when the restaurant’s roof opens during accommodating weather.\u003cbr\u003eThis delightful menu cover celebrates the cherubs of the kitchen – the hard-working kitchen staff in every restaurant that customers never see.\u003cbr\u003eThe whimsical artwork was created by E Naudy, a French commercial artist whose creative period was at its peak from the 1930s to the 40s.There is some suggestion that his name was a pseudonym for artist Alfred Renaudin (1866 to 1944) who was well-known for landscape paintings (E. Naudy) uses some of the middle letters of his last name. This event would turn out to be one of the last displays of the company's furs and perfumes. The factory was seized by the Nazis in the 1940s. We do know that this meal was prepared and presented by one of Paris’ great chefs of the day, Raymond Oliver, of Le Grand \u003cspan\u003eVéfour\u003c\/span\u003e, one of the most celebrated restaurants in Paris. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eLe Grand Vefour originally opened in 1784 and was closed from 1905 until 1947. The rejuvenated restaurant re-opened in 1948 with Oliver in the kitchen and a menu designed by Jean Cocteau. Domaine Champagne Mercier, produced in the Epernay region of France – home to many of the most celebrated champagne houses – was founded in1858 by Eugene (accent on the first e) Mercier.\u003cbr\u003eA master of showmanship and marketing, his great idea was to make champagne a drink for ordinary people celebrating special occasions.\u003cbr\u003eMercier also had an innate understanding of how to promote his product.\u003cbr\u003eHe ordered the construction of the world’s largest wine barrel – a Cathedral of Champagne – that was estimated to hold 250,000 bottles. He organized trips for customers in a Mercier-branded hydrogen balloon above Paris and he shot the first-ever film that showed the champagne production process. Careme was the inventor of “mother sauces” that were used in different dishes and of pastries such as mille-feuille.\u003cbr\u003eAfter cooking for the Czar, Alexander II of Russia, Tanty came to America to settle his three sons in business and wrote this recipe book. He wanted to show Americans how they could enjoy French cuisine in their homes – as television personality and chef Julia Child did decades later.\u003cbr\u003eAccustomed to preparing food for royalty, Tanty’s ideas were rather grand. He thought family dinners should consist of six courses including two kinds of soup.\u003cbr\u003eThe book was dedicated to Mrs H. G. Selfridge – Rose Amelia Selfridge (1860-1918) – wife of the department store magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge. It tastes American.’\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe think this is a joke centered on the competition between these two great rubber tire companies in the 19th century.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMichelin Man, the symbol of the Michelin Tyre Company, was introduced at the Lyon Exhibition of 1894 in France.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDunlop was founded in 1889 in Dublin, Ireland, and later grew into one of the first multi-national British companies, expanding into United States.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMichelin advertised its rubber goods – at the time the tires were mostly made for carriages and bicycles – with an amazing series of posters which showed the Michelin Man and his famous quote Nunc est Bibendum – Now Is the Time for Drinking.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlso on the poster were the words Le Pneu Michelin Boit L’obstacle – Michelin Tires Drink The Obstacle – this is roughly translated into: 'Michelin tires leave the competition in the dust.'\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eStill with us? We think this was a joke dreamed up by Dunlop to try to put the Michelin Man in his place.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt was printed on a postcard that could be used only in French territory, which at that time also extended to Algeria and Tunisia, and was probably used for marketing. You could say it was the first instance of one company trolling another.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf anyone has other thoughts on this gorgeous image and the meaning behind it, we’d be glad to hear. Originally built for the Navigazione Generale Italiana (NGI) as SS Guglielmo Marconi, its state-ordered merger with the Lloyd Sabaudo line meant that the ship sailed for the newly created Italia Flotta Riunite (Italian Line).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRex operated transatlantic crossings from Italy with its running mate, the Conte di Savoia prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. Rex maintained a commercial service in the Mediterranean for a short period, but when Italy entered the war in June 1940 Rex was laid up for safe-keeping. On 8 September 1944, off Koper (Slovenia), Rex was hit by 123 rockets launched by RAF aircraft, caught fire from stem to stern. She burned for four days, then rolled onto the port side, and sank in shallow water. The ship was broken up at the site beginning in 1947. Launched in 1879, this magnificent steamship sailed with staterooms for 81 First Class passengers, for whom this menu was made. There was room too for 46 Second Class passengers, 36 Third Class passengers and as many as 1200 in steerage. It sailed from to Hong Kkong, China, Aden and Madagascar and was eventually scuttled in 1918 after service in the First World War.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis 1906 menu image of an ostrich balancing a foaming glass of beer on its left leg was created by the French illustrator and watercolor artist Auguste Vimar. Born in Marseille, France, in 1851, he became an illustrator for children’s books and also contributed some of his wonderful animal images to Le Figaro Illustré. He died in 1916. The dandified ostrich the monkey waiter being nipped by a lobster were part of Vimar’s contribution to the fashion at that time for fantastical art images – later this style of artwork became known as magical realism.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis was a hearty dinner menu which included items such as scallops, roast beef and aubergine curry.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRobert Bacon, the former American Secretary of State who served only 37 days in his post in 1909 until President Theodore Roosevelt left office, sailed on the Oxus to Hong Kong and China and described it as a “large and comfortable” ship. Its first voyage was in 1876 from Bordeaux in France to Montevideo in Uruguay. In later years it also sailed to Egypt and Syria. It had accommodation for 125 first class passengers, 66 second class passengers, 54 third class passengers and up to 500 immigrants who would have been accommodated in steerage. The ship, which also delivered freight and mail, was taken out of service during the First World War and turned into a floating naval hospital. Launched in 1874, this magnificent steamship sailed with staterooms for 124 First Class passengers, for whom this menu was made. There was room too for 66 Second Class passengers, 54 Third Class passengers and “500 emigrants between decks”. It sailed from France to South America until 1895 when it began sailing the Eastern Mediterranean. It was scrapped in 1925 after service in the First World War.\u003cbr\u003eThis 1900 menu image of a bear balancing a glass of wine on its paw was created by the French illustrator and watercolor artist Auguste Vimar. Born in Marseille, France, in 1851, he became an illustrator for children’s books and also contributed some of his wonderful animal images to Le Figaro Illustré. He died in 1916.
