Created by the celebrated artist and author Andrew Loomis*, it shows a voluptuous, brunette mermaid riding a lobster side-saddle in this 1940s menu. The oyster loaf – a thick chunk of crusty bread hollowed out and stuffed with breaded and fried oysters – is an important part of San Francisco's hospitality history. The story goes that in the early years of the city's history, judges, senators and aristocrats would go out drinking at unsavory bars and then buy oyster loaves as peace offerings before heading home to their wives waiting in mansions in Nob Hill. He opened the glamorous Copacabana night club in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf in September 1941 and it soon became a popular hang out for celebrities of the era. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall frequented it often during their honeymoon and John Wayne was a big fan. Joaquin released an album \"A Night At Joaquin Garay's Copacabana\" in the mid-1940s and the sleeve notes read as follows: \"\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"\u003eJoaquin came to San Francisco from native Mexico at the age of eleven months. His life has been filled with music and excitement. Motion pictures, the stage, vaudeville and radio have been his respective oyster. As owner of COPACABANA, he presides over the floor show functions and dominates the scene with a personality so vibrant, so heartwarming, that many of his patrons average three nights weekly in the Copa. Originally built in 1863, the year of the Battle of Gettysburg, it is constructed on cliffs on the westernmost edge of the city. This witty menu dates from 1934, just after the repeal of prohibition, and was probably created to celebrate a change of ownership when George and Leo Whitney, owners of a local fairground called Playland, bought the property and extensively remodeled it as an upscale roadhouse. The property, which has been rebuilt several times  after suffering earthquakes, fires and serious storms, is the crown jewel of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013. Sabella's, San Francisco, 1959","description":"\u003cp\u003eA dancing fish wearing a chef's hat and brandishing cooking utensils is the star of this 1959 menu from the famous A. Sabella's seafood restaurant on San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Established in 1927, the restaurant was owned by Luciano Sabella, one of many Sicilian immigrants who dominated the city's fishing industry at that time. He and his son Antone opened a fish store in Jefferson Street and then established the restaurant on the historic Wharf. Four generations of the Sabella family ran the restaurant in the ensuing decades as well as the Capri Room, a supper club which flourished in the 1950s.  Sadly A. Sabellas, which had a magnificent view of the Bay, closed in 2007 when family members decided they didn't want to continue in the restaurant business. Both became wildly popular comic strip characters.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThis menu cover comes from the famous Wimpy's Inn which operated in two locations in San Francisco in the 1930s. Brothers Walt and Adolph Schoch, the sons of Swiss immigrants, also used the cartoon character's name for their hamburger and hot dog shops. Their motto  was,  \"Wimpy Says Keep Smiling\" - a reference to the fact that Wimpy was a morose sidekick to Popeye - and they printed the motto on all their menus. J. The restaurant flourished, with meals priced approximately $1.00. The second floor boasted private dining rooms, perhaps appropriate for a rendezvous. On the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors, there were intimately designed suites where guest could go for private desserts. The 6th floor was where banquets were held. This room and could serve upwards of 250 people.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe Old Poodle Dog was destroyed by the earthquake and fire of 1906. The restaurant re-opened in 1908 but closed its doors once again during prohibition. In 1933 the venerable restaurant re-opened at 65 Post Street. A family squabble closed the place once again in 1980 but was given yet another life by Cal Lalanne, a descendant of one of the original owners in 1984 when the Ritz Old Poodle Dog re-opened for the last time. There was a minimum service charge of 50 cents between the hours of 2am and 4am, so people couldn’t just buy a coffee (15 cents with 10c for a refill) and hog a table during the wee hours. There was an all-day breakfast service, three-hour lunch service and dinner hour lasted until 11pm. In between, customers could fill up on sandwiches, salads and pastries. The most expensive item on the menu was a 22-ounce Porterhouse steak for four dollars. The Baths could accommodate 10,000 people at one time and offered 20,000 bathing suits and 40,000 towels for rent.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt high tide, the Pacific Ocean could fill seven separate swimming pools with 1.7 million gallons of water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy the late 1890s, several railroads provide transportation to the area and grateful San Franciscans could enjoy an inexpensive day out at the Baths and at the Cliff House, which had areas for dining, dancing and other entertainment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSutro died in 1898 and over time, the Baths lost their popularity due to the Great Depression, reduction in public transportation and stricter public health codes. An ice-skating rink failed and in 1966, fire destroyed what was left of the Baths and they were allowed to go to ruin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis wonderful poster hung in the Cliff House restaurant, which was first established as a resort in 1863. In 1919, there were 2500 wineries and by the 1930s only about a hundred wineries were still in existence. Later, WW2 would halt any serious growth.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut restaurateur Rino Del Curto, gathered the best that was available for this 1942 wine list, serving wines from Napa and Sonoma Valley and some imported wines and champagnes. Del Curto’s parents were Italian immigrants. His father had come to work in the silver mines in Utah in the early 1900s but moved the family back to their home-town of Prosto. Italy, a tiny village near the Swiss border.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter working as a busboy at the famously elegant Palace Hotel in St Moritz, 15-year-old Del Curto boarded a ship bound for San Francisco. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEventually, he opened The Rex – Latin for the King – at 401 Broadway Street and it became a popular destination for businessmen. He also opened the Marconi restaurant in the city’s financial district.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter selling the restaurants, Del Curto became a successful realtor and businessman. Lobby paintings depicted Drake’s explorations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDespite the Great Depression, the hotel prospered, survived Prohibition (there was a secret room where booze was stored) and attracted wealthy guests and celebrities of the day. During WWII, blocks of rooms were taken over by the military and the hotel was the scene of many tearful farewells and joyous reunions as troops went back and forth across the Pacific.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis charming menu illustration of dancing ducks came from the hotel’s soda fountain – we love the ‘fancy pants’ sundaes. (In Polynesian culture, they were used to protect sacred sites).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tiki that was created for Tiki Bob’s, greeting guests as they entered the establishment, was different. Whimsical and charming, it had been given a friendly and mid-century modern twist by its creator Alec Yuill-Thornton (1917-1986). Born in Manila in the Philippines, Alec moved to the US and became a successful architect and artist. But his most famous work remains Tiki Bob.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSven Kirsten, widely recognized as the world authority on Tiki culture, has described it as ‘part George Jetson and part Modern Primitive.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Tiki craze died out as America embraced The Swinging Sixties but Tiki Bob’s remained open at the corner of Post and Taylor Streets until 1983. Successive businesses left the Tiki in situ but did not give this icon the care it deserved. Through the ensuing decades, it was painted different colors, and someone even gave it a pair of spectacles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat changed when Tiki fans and preservationists Heather David, Martin Cate and Donald Harvey restored Tiki Bob to glory in 2019.
