For decades, Mayflower donuts were so popular there were constant lines outside the shops with people waiting eagerly for plump, brown and sugary doughnuts to emerge hot from the machines. A twelve-table clam bar called Kenny's had stood at number 258 since 1876 and John J. Cavanagh took it over in 1894 and so Cavanagh's was born. It soon became popular with Tammany Hall politicians and sporting figures, especially prize-fighters, and the business flourished. The restaurant expanded by taking over adjoining four story buildings and was soon hosting opera stars from the nearby Grand Opera House on Eighth Avenue. One attempt at innovation backfired spectacularly when a phonograph was introduced to provide entertainment to the patrons. That is, until the celebrated Metropolitan Opera House star Luisa Tetrazzini came in and caused a terrible scene after hearing \"distortions\" in her own voice. Unlike many other restaurants Cavanagh's survived the Prohibition years because it never had a bar and didn't rely on alcohol sales. The club was known as America's Showcase in the 1940s because stars such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis performed here. Opened in 1937 as Ben Marden's Riviera Russian born impresario Bill Miller bought the nightclub in the late 1940s. It only operated during the summer and opened for one additional night on New Year's Eve. The fabled art deco building, painted yellow, had a retractable roof so guests could dance under the stars and also had a revolving stage. The Riviera was demolished in 1953 to make way for the Palisades Interstate Parkway. The Concord Hotel was a famous holiday resort in the 40s,'50s and '60s run by Russian immigrant Arthur Winarick and his family. A two hour drive from New York City, the resort was set amid 2,000 acres of grounds and had 1250 guest rooms and a 3,000-seat restaurant that was entirely kosher. There were 40 tennis courts – more than Wimbledon, the hotel boasted – and three golf courses including one called The Monster. Some 1,100 lounge chairs were set around the outdoor swimming pool. The Concord had a reputation for top entertainment. Famous comedians and crooners of the era played there and guests danced to the music of big bands in the cavernous nightclub called Rio Cabana that had dance instructors on hand to show them the steps. As air travel became more affordable, resorts like the Concord fell out of favor and the hotel was sold in a bankruptcy foreclosure in 1999. The 1940s and 1950s saw the Art Deco styled New Yorker at the peak of its popularity and it was widely regarded as one of New York's most fashionable hotels. Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey played there and the New York Observer noted that in the building's heyday, \"\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci style=\"line-height: 1.2;\"\u003eactors, celebrities, athletes, politicians, mobsters, the shady and the luminous—the entire Brooklyn Dodgers roster during the glory seasons—would stalk the bars and ballrooms, or romp upstairs\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"line-height: 1.2;\"\u003e\". The hotel went through a succession of owners until it was finally bought by Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church in 1975 for $5.6 million. The building was converted for use by the church's members. It was originally known as the Horn Farmhouse and sat at what would be the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street. It was turned into an inn by William “Corporal” Thompson and it was named Madison Cottage after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, who died in 1836. The building was razed in 1853 to make room first for Franconi's Roman Hippodrome and then for the Fifth Avenue Hotel, Madison Cottage ultimately gave rise to the names for the adjacent avenue (Madison Avenue) and park, which are therefore only indirectly named after President James Madison. The hotel's telephone number, Pennsylvania 6-5000, inspired the Glenn Miller 1940 Top 5 Billboard hit of the same name. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStatler Hotels acquired the property outright from the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1948 and renamed it the Hotel Statler. Following the sale of all 17 Statler hotels to Conrad Hilton in 1954, the hotel became the Statler Hilton. The developer William Zeckendorf Jr. bought the Statler Hilton in 1979, after which the hotel was operated by Dunfey Hotels and renamed the New York Statler. The hotel was sold again in 1983 to a joint venture, renamed the New York Penta, and renovated extensively. The hostelry was renamed several times in the 1990s, eventually becoming the Hotel Pennsylvania.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVornado Realty Trust and Ong Beng Seng bought the hotel in 1997, although Vornado later bought out Ong's stake. Vornado considered closing and demolishing the Hotel Pennsylvania several times before finally shuttering it in 2020. There is a certain charm here though with the two nesting storks showing their own kind of sophistication as they gaze over a provincial town that could be anywhere in the U.S. or even in the south of France.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe Stork Club was never short on gossip or anecdotes that the public would regularly and eagerly consume. One night in 1940, back in New York, Hemingway had grandiosely tried to pay his bar bill at the Stork with a $100,000 royalty check he had gotten for the screen rights to For Whom the Bell Tolls. (A hundred thousand dollars in 1940 would be $1.2 million today.) Billingsley shook his head; no way he could cash that check, not then. But if Hemingway could wait until closing time ... Then, amazingly, Billingsley did cash it, although it is hard to imagine how, with the club then grossing —officially, anyway —by Billingsley's account, $3,500 a night. The secret gangster partners reluctantly allowed Billingsley to buy them out for $30,000 after the incident. Apparently the authorities were able to overlook the escapade.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBillingsley's mistress, Ethel Merman, introduced him to the entertainment and gossip columnist Walter Winchell who called the Stork Club \"New York's New Yorkiest place\". What Winchell saw and heard there at his private Table 50 was the basis of his newspaper columns and radio broadcasts. Lucius Beebe, the author of the Stork Club Bar Book, was noted as the \"orchidaceous oracle of cafe society\", a gourmand, bon vivant and author, who chronicled the activities of the boldfaced celebrities at the Stork Club in his syndicated column, \"This Is New York\". Billingsley had around the clock coverage of the Stork Club that certainly enhanced and helped cement the clubs position and reputation. He sold newspapers on the street as a child and at 14, he turned to professional fighting, changing his name to Jimmy Kelly to fit in with the Irish-controlled boxing world of turn-of-the-century New York.\u003cbr\u003e When that career failed, he got a job at the Pelham Café in Chinatown in 1906 alongside the club’s singing waiter Irving Berlin. Kelly’s job was to control the crowds and pitch pennies at the man who would eventually become one of the greatest songwriters in American history in the hope that customers would follow suit.\u003cbr\u003eKelly turned to politics and became a political organizer for Tammany Hall, a Democratic party political machine known for helping the poor but also for corruption,\u003cbr\u003eHe opened Jimmy Kelly’s the Montmartre of New York in 1921 and it was patronized by both gangsters and respectable society figures. The Blue Ribbon 100-minute floor show featured dancers and a big band, with the New York Times noting that Mr Kelly’s dancing girls and boys “stamp, tap, croon, harmonize and contortion-dance their way without pausing for breath.”\u003cbr\u003e Kelly’s wide circle of friends included Joe di Maggio, Walter Winchell and some of Al Capone’s henchmen. A noted bon viveur, he played host at the restaurant to Britain’s Duke of Windsor (then Prince of Wales) and the Astors and Vanderbilts.\u003cbr\u003eA gambler, he bet on horses, fights, craps, hockey games and baseball but remained a wealthy man. He never forgot his humble roots and paid the rents of many families in Greenwich Village and distributed food baskets at Christmas. For these charitable efforts, he was unofficially called The Mayor of Greenwich Village.
