His restaurants, designed by the revered architect Wayne McAllister, were fabulously kitsch and garish and customers could spot their huge neon signs from miles away. McDonnell employed a local artist to sketch whimsical interpretations of the car-hops or waiters that served cokes, hamburgers and fries to customers for its menus and this is one of the earlier examples. The restaurant also served some of the best fried chicken in the state, raising its own chickens on a 250 acre ranch at Daggett, California. It had a Polynesian theme and billed itself as \"the informal cocktail lounge and dining room of the motion picture industry.\" Certainly, if walls could talk, this bar and restaurant would have many tales to tell. Hollywood directors brought impressionable young starlets here and big-name stars of the 30s and 40s often dropped by. Sugie was quite a character and a self-promoter, which is evident in this menu he wrote and created. He ran a series of cinemas and theaters, including Grauman's Egyptian Theater in Hollywood before opening The Tropics in 1936. He was always discreet, hence the three monkeys and the \"hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil \" slogan. Patrons were incredibly loyal to The Broken Drum on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica and were shaken when the restaurant closed in 1986, according to local newspaper reports we've seen. The hamburger joint was a long-standing institution and is even now remembered fondly by former customers. With its open fire and wood-burning ovens and fresh flowers on every table, the restaurant served food until 4am and many aspiring actors and actresses used it as a place to meet and fret about their careers. It comes from the beautiful Catalina Casino, still a focal point of Catalina Island's entertainment scene.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14px;\"\u003eThe unique Moorish and Deco structure was completed in 1929 under the direction of magnates William Wrigley Jr. and David M. Renton. It was the first completely circular building built in the modern era and cost two million dollars. It contained a movie theater and film tycoons such as Cecil B. DeMille, Sam Goldwyn and Louis B. Mayer would travel by yacht to the Catalina Casino to preview their films. The ballroom, built above the movie theater, was a huge attraction that could hold 6,000 dancers. Big band entertainers performed here and could also be heard via nightly radio broadcasts.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14px;\"\u003eThe Marine Bar was created on the mezzanine level of the ballroom as a refuge for dancers and others from an over-flowing ballroom. The Marine Bar was actually a \"soda bar\" and this menu is from the 1930s. Only non-alcoholic beverages could be ordered from the menu. Customers could have a \"Real Hamburger \" sandwich for 15 cents and any other \"Sit'N Eat\" sandwich in their car. Lyman’s restaurants were loyally populated by the A-Listers from the worlds of show biz and sports.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThis eye catching tri-fold menu has an astonishing array of selections.  Besides featuring Lyman’s custom cocktails on the front cover, the interior menu features “Kosher Style Dishes” including “Stuffed Kishke” and “Gefuelte Fish”, dozens of seafood options including “Catalina Sandabs” and “Baked Baby Barracuda”. There was steak, duck, capon and “Mexican Chicken Enchiladas” to dine on, plenty of sandwiches, omelettes and fine wines. For the curious there was “Farmer’s Chop Suey (sour cream)”. We think you could have dined there several times a month without having the same thing twice. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe legacy of Mike Lyman’s Grills has been further cemented by two tidbits of literary history. In Mathew J. Bruccoli’s book, “Some Sort Of Epic Grandeur”, a biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald, he notes that Fitzgerald dined out for the last time with Sheilah Graham, a mistress, at Lyman’s Grill at the Hollywood and Vine location. There is a lot to see on this two-dimensional 1940s menu – the intimidated diner holding a forkful of spaghetti, two potatoes shaking hands with each other and the barbecue that is described as a “knockout.” Both Bing Crosby and Bob Hope lived nearby and we like to think at least one of them and other movie stars dropped in. The Keg is no more, of course, and we’ve been unable to find out much about it. Drive-in restaurants became all the rage as more Americans took to the roads across the USA.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe sandwich stand became a fully-fledged drive-in called The Pico and also had a counter restaurant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe Roberts brothers opened The Wilshire in 1931 and then followed The Hollywood, The Burbank and The Sepulveda. Some of the locations had cocktail bars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe buildings were designed by Wayne McAllister, the revered architect who was a leader in the Googie style of architecture that incorporated the automobile and the Space Age. These wonderful images come from matchbook covers that were distributed free to customers (most people smoked cigarettes back then) as a marketing tool. These images epitomizes the charm and inventiveness of the vintage menu artist. He or she has anthropomorphized the pig and the chicken to make them into real-life and loveable characters. The typography is elegant, with fonts that seem clear and modern and are in contrast to the calligraphy style that was popular then.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWilshire Blvd was created in 1895 - wealthy homeowners built grand mansions along the route – but its residential status began to change in the 1920s when businessman A W Ross successfully fought the city of Los Angeles to have his property re-zoned for business. As the years went by, other homeowners followed suit or sold their properties to others as commerce intruded. 3953 Wilshire Blvd, where Ham and Eggs Incorporated was located, later became a bar called the Rocket Room and later still became a bar called The Executive Room. The Sunset Route (originating in New Orleans) is the southernmost of the three gateways to the West Coast, envisioned through the Transcontinental Railroad Act.  The advantages of the Sunset Route were that unlike the other two, it did not have to assault the front range of the Rockies, and was an all-weather, year-round route that didn’t face the crippling snows of the Wasatch or Sierra mountain ranges to reach the Pacific coast. In 1930, the route was cut back to Los Angeles and the train carried coaches for the first time. In 1936, the train resumed running to San Francisco and was one of SP's first trains to receive air conditioning. In January of 1942, it was cut back to Los Angeles; the Sunset Limited was never again all-Pullman and never again ran beyond Los Angeles. As befits as a community where looks mattered, there was also a streamline menu for patrons on diets. For those who desired privacy, there were private suites where guests sipped champagne or martinis and personal shoppers attended their every wish. Bullock’s was damaged during the LA riots in 1992 and closed its doors the following year as fans fought to keep dishes and cutlery as souvenirs. This elegant building is now owned by Southwestern Law School which has beautifully preserved the decor of Bullocks Tea Room and turned it into a study hall. Coffee Dan's sent a Cease and Desist letter to the owner Harold Butler who decided to change one letter in the name and Danny's became Denny's Coffee Shops. Among the famous names who dined there; Ginger Rogers, Jimmy Cagney, Hedy Lamar (once named the most beautiful woman in the world) and John Garfield. Helen Rose, head costume designer at MGM, was also a regular.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eSonny’s son Richard, now in his 80s, told us a great story about a young up and coming actress who once complained that the ‘ice was too cold’ in her cocktail. The restaurant served fresh seafood until 1975 when a storm damaged both the restaurant and the pier. Both were demolished.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJack’s at the Beach moved inland, to 2700 Wilshire. The restaurant was sold in 1990 to the small but venerable Los Angeles Pacific Dining Car chain. Whimsical architecture was popular at the time, and the restaurant was designed to catch the eye of passing motorists. The Brown Derby name originated from a Malverne, New York-based restaurant of the same name that had been a popular hang-out for vaudevillians in the 1920s. It was founded by Wilson Mizner as a small cafe, across the street from the popular Hollywood hot spot the Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel. Wilson was the front man; Herbert K. Somborn owned the property and Jack L. Warner put up the money. Wilson Mizner sat in booth 50 almost every day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe cafe was successful enough to warrant building a second branch later. The original, derby-shaped building was moved in 1937 to 3377 Wilshire Boulevard at the northeast corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Alexandria Avenue, about a block from its previous location (and directly across the street from the Ambassador Hotel).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn September 1980, the restaurant closed without warning. The Ambassador Hotels System sold the hotel in 1927, and it was sold again in 1930, before going bankrupt and closing in 1932. The hotel's gold leaf ceilings, furniture, chandeliers and other fittings were sold in 1934 to pay off debts. The hotel was sold multiple times over the years until it was eventually converted to an apartment building in 2005. The hotel played host to countless film shoots including Se7en, where it served as the residence of the killer, John Doe, for a lengthy chase sequence through much of the hotel. The article described the diverse dining options available: \"In addition to an interesting coffee shop, the new Huddle offers diners their choice of five different dining rooms, each as unusual as they are new and beautiful. The 'Sky Room' offers diners a panoramic view of the Santa Monica Airport, the Hollywood Hills and the Pacific Ocean. In the 'Huddle Room' the designers combined an American style dining room with designs and decorations with an international flavor. The 'Patio Room' features thirty-foot high colored glass panel windows, indoor tropical trees and planting and driftwood stone walls. The buildings were designed to cater to the city’s expanding automobile culture, catching the eye of drivers.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Brown Derby restaurant, created in the shape of a hat in 1926, was the first example of this type of architecture and the Toed Inn was erected on Channel Road in Santa Monica in the 1930s. Apparently, the frog’s toes really did turn in.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe building was damaged in the floods of 1938 when two Pacific storms swept across the Los Angeles basin and generated almost a year’s worth of rain in two days. The flood caused $78 million of damage –nearly $2 billion in today’s money - and was designated a 50-year flood and one of the costliest natural disasters in the city’s history.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRestaurateur Ben Rosenfeld bought the Toed Inn after it was damaged and relocated it to 12008 Wilshire Boulevard in West Los Angeles. The restaurant’s telephone number was Arizona – 9-6712.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Toed Inn was still in operation in 1953, the date of this menu. Designed as a souvenir of one of LA’s iconic restaurants, the message we found on the back says ‘I love you too. One customer claimed he'd eaten at his local Ships every day for ten years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLos Angeles historian Alison Martino, a lifelong fan, noted that because every table had its own Sunbeam toaster, Ships always smelled like burnt toast.
