The owner, Daniel Nichols, was fleeing bankruptcy in France and had arrived in London two years earlier with his wife Célestine and her savings of just £5. Daniel suffered from diabetes and died in 1897. By the turn of the century this restaurant was the most famous in London. Célestine Nicols took over the management of the Café Royal after Daniel's death and ran it until her own death in 1916. This is one of the beautifully illustrated menus from that golden era. Embossed in gold, and with a rather smart poodle offering a basket of flowers as a gift, the menu is written in French which was the style at that time. Over the 143 years that the restaurant was open at 68 Regent Street in London's West End, its fans included Oscar Wilde, who one evening became so drunk on absinthe, he started to hallucinate. He wrote that he saw a waiter watering a field of tulips when in fact the waiter was stacking chairs in the bar. Aleister Crowley, Virginia Woolf, Winston Churchill, Noel Coward, future monarchs Edward VIII and George VI, George Bernard Shaw, Brigitte Bardot, Mick Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Muhammad Ali, Margaret Thatcher and Diana, Princess of Wales all enjoyed the pleasures of the restaurant. In 1996, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay had his wedding there. The Café Royal closed its doors as a restaurant for the last time in December 2008. Two champagnes were also on offer, Roederer's Carte Blanche (Extra Dry), and a long lost house and style, Rittscher's White Dry Sillery, the still champagne that was featured widely on wine lists in the latter part of the 19th century but has now virtually vanished. Wheeler's Oyster Bar was established in Whitstable, a lovely small fishing town on the Kent coast, in 1856 by Richard Leggy Wheeler, a master mariner. In 1929, This Wheeler's Restaurant was opened in Old Compton Street in London and was the flagship for a chain of restaurants that has since closed down. The original Wheeler's Oyster Bar in Whitstable, still proudly serving fish dishes some 157 years after its birth, remains open. The Piccadilly Hotel was built in London in 1908 and was one of the capital city's most luxurious places to stay. There were 300 bedrooms, several top-class restaurants and Masonic Temples in the basement. Staff drew water from the property's own well so guests did not have to drink from the city's then questionable public water supply. By the time a guest of the hotel could sip a Piccadilly Cocktail from this 1950s list, there were no concerns regarding the quality of the ice in one's glass. Splash about in the indoor pool filled with salty water and then have oxtail soup and steak pie and chips for lunch. Tea, Horlick’s and ice cream sodas were on the drinks menu in the cafe. In the bar, where Les Shannon and his band played nightly, you could dance the bunny hop or the boogie woogie and order everything from champagne to pints of stout. So not inexpensive whichever measure you use. By the mid-1960s, Queen Mary was ageing and, though still among the most popular transatlantic liners, was operating at a loss. After several years of decreased profits for Cunard Line, Queen Mary was officially retired from service in 1967. She left Southampton for the last time on 31 October 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, United States, where she remains permanently moored. Much of the machinery, including one of the two engine rooms, three of the four propellers, and all of the boilers, were removed. This is a menu from that restaurant. If you have ever wondered what it must be like to dine at an Escoffier restaurant, this is the closest you will come to having that experience. The menu includes caviar, beef broth, lamb, quail, oysters, asparagus and Escoffier’s famous dessert creation Peach Melba.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe aristocratic lady in a wig and a large hat on the front of the menu, drawn in soft and muted colors, would have been a very sophisticated cover at the time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEscoffier died in 1935 but his Le Guide Culinaire remains an influential textbook on cooking and chefs throughout the world continue to follow the rules he laid down.The dining room was a favorite of Winston Churchill's. The hotel was damaged by German bombs in 1940 and eventually demolished in 1957\/8. Apart from the table d'hôte, guests could choose from an à la carte menu containing a couple of dozen hors d'oeuvres, at least a dozen soups and numerous entrées, roasts, entremets, pastries, savouries and desserts. The owner, Daniel Nichols, was fleeing bankruptcy in France and had arrived in London two years earlier with his wife Célestine and her savings of just £5. Daniel suffered from diabetes and died in 1897. By the turn of the century this restaurant was the most famous in London. Célestine Nicols took over the management of the Café Royal after Daniel's death and ran it until her own death in 1916. This is one of the beautifully illustrated menus from that golden era. Over the 143 years that the restaurant was open at 68 Regent Street in London's West End, its fans included Oscar Wilde, who one evening became so drunk on absinthe, he started to hallucinate. He wrote that he saw a waiter watering a field of tulips when in fact the waiter was stacking chairs in the bar. Aleister Crowley, Virginia Woolf, Winston Churchill, Noel Coward, future monarchs Edward VIII and George VI, George Bernard Shaw, Brigitte Bardot, Mick Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Muhammad Ali, Margaret Thatcher and Diana, Princess of Wales all enjoyed the pleasures of the restaurant. In 1996, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay had his wedding there. The Café Royal closed its doors as a restaurant for the last time in December 2008. Doric 1934","description":"\u003cp\u003eS.S. Doric was White Star's second and last turbine-propelled ship. The ship's maiden voyage on 8 June 1923, was from Liverpool, England to Montreal. It is believed the Doric served on this same basic route from Liverpool to Quebec and Montreal from 1923 to 1932. From 1933 until her end in 1935, the Doric was used for only cruising. She was based at Liverpool until 1934. On 5 September 1935 Doric collided with the French vessel Formigny, of the Chargeurs Reunis line, off Cape Finisterre. Following this collision the ship had emergency repairs at Vigo, Spain. However once the Doric returned to England her damage was determined to be a constructive total loss and she was subsequently scrapped in November 1935 at Cashmores shipbreaker's yard in Newport, Monmouthshire. Queen Mary was the flagship of the Cunard Line from May 1936 until October 1946 when she was replaced in that role by Queen Elizabeth.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eQueen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage on 27 May 1936 and captured the Blue Riband in August of that year; she lost the title to SS Normandie in 1937 and recaptured it in 1938, holding it until 1952 when she was beaten by the new SS United States. With the outbreak of the Second World War, she was converted into a troopship and ferried Allied soldiers for the duration of the war.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFollowing the war, Queen Mary was refitted for passenger service and along with Queen Elizabeth commenced the two-ship transatlantic passenger service for which the two ships were initially built. The two ships dominated the transatlantic passenger transportation market until the dawn of the jet age in the late 1950s. By the mid-1960s, Queen Mary was ageing and, though still among the most popular transatlantic liners, was operating at a loss.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter several years of decreased profits for Cunard Line, Queen Mary was officially retired from service in 1967. She left Southampton for the last time on 31 October 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, United States, where she remains permanently moored. After dinner, there were theatrical revues, dancing and a cabaret.\u003cbr\u003e In the 1930s, the legendary American composer Cole Porter who wrote such masterpieces as I Get A Kick Out of You and Night and Day regularly travelled over from his home on the Left Bank in Paris to meet friends here, showcase new songs and perform for patrons.\u003cbr\u003eDuring World War II, many theatres and cinemas in London closed but the Café De Paris was one of the establishments that stayed open. Thought to be a safe-haven because it was housed in a basement, people came here throughout The Blitz to dance waltzes or the jitterbug and to forget about the rigors of rationing and blackouts.\u003cbr\u003eIn 1941, the area of London around Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square was strafed by bombs and a German pilot dropped two bombs that crashed through the roof of the building, hurtled down a ventilation shaft and exploded on the dance floor. Some 80 people – patrons, staff and members of a swing band - were killed or injured. People reportedly poured champagne on wounds to clean them. Albeit a rather bland and colourless version. Although Csarda shook from some nearby bombs, the large windows stayed intact and in his autobiographical book Ways of Escape Greene wrote that “by ten it was obvious that this was a real blitz. Left at ten thirty and walked back to Gower Mews. Wished I had my steel helmet. Changed, and went out with D, who was fire-watching. Inside we find a menu full of delicacies and treats – along with a toast list, and pictures of what we presume are the club’s board, most senior members, and their guests.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Press Club’s president, Lord Burnham, was the owner of the Daily Telegraph. Unfortunately we don’t know much about the other chaps pictured – save for one young MP, Winston Churchill.
